There is very little question that alcohol can negatively affect one’s thought process.  This is one of the many reasons that drunk driving is dangerous and can and often does result in a serious car accident.   However, every so often, we see a news article where a person alleged to be driving under the influence of alcohol goes a step above and beyond the norm, and their seemingly strange actions make national headlines.

prisonAccording to a recent news article from Fox 25 News, a man was just arrested after he drove himself to the local sheriff’s station while he was highly intoxicated.  The reason this man was going to the sheriff’s station was to pick up another family member who had been arrested and held at the county jail but was scheduled to be released that day.  In other words, he was there to pick up a family member, and came to the jail while drunk. According to a recent news report from the Boston Globe, a mother and her two young twins were celebrating Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts when things went seriously wrong. As the trio left the downtown center, they realized that one child had dropped a stuffed animal.

sad2At this point, the mom and her children turned around to get the stuffed animal.  She looked both ways before entering the crosswalk that led from the street to the MBTA station.  As she entered the street with her children, a Subaru seemingly came out of nowhere and allegedly crashed into the family of three. According to a recent news article from ESPN, Alvin Bailey, a guard on the Cleveland Browns, is facing a possible two-game suspension following his plea of no contest to a criminal charge that he was driving under the influence in the city’s suburban area.

footballProsecutors have said Bailey was arrested following a traffic stop.  The arresting offer witnessed Bailey speeding and initiated a stop of his vehicle. The officer wrote in his police report that Bailey exited his vehicle despite the officer ordering him to remain in his vehicle.  Police officers typically want a suspect to have his or her hands in a vehicle that is turned off with the driver’s window down and do not want to the suspect to get out of vehicle until told to do so, as this can be very dangerous for an officer without backup. According to a recent news article from the New York Post, a 19-year-old college student in Texas was allegedly attempting to take a topless selfie when she crashed into the back of a police car that was stopped ahead of her.  The accident occurred with enough force to deploy the airbags in both vehicles.

phoneWhen the officer stepped out of his vehicle and went to check on the driver of the car that allegedly slammed into his cruiser, he saw the suspect quickly trying to put her blouse back on.  The officer then asked the suspect why she was not fully dressed when driving her vehicle and she allegedly told the officer that she had taken her blouse off so she could send her boyfriend a topless selfie photo of herself using the Snapchat app on her smart phone.  She believed she was stopped at a light at the time. Drunk driving is a criminal offense, despite the fact many frequent drunk drivers do not think of it as a crime.  While many people would never even dream of stealing a candy bar from a local drug store or supermarket, they have no problem drinking to the point of intoxication and then getting behind the wheel of a car.  This action is not only criminal, but can and often does result in a serious personal injury or even death.

one car keyNot only do people not see it as a crime before they are caught, many people are willing to get behind the wheel and do it again after they have been arrested for drunk driving on at least one prior occasion. According to a recent news article from the Boston Globe, a drunk driving car crash just resulted in a man near Waltham, Massachusetts being arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs (OUI) second offense.  As a result of this crash, defendant and another driver ended up in local hospitals. According to a recent news article from CBS Local Boston, a police officer from the East Bridgewater Police Department suffered severe personal injuries after he was hit by and alleged drunk driver while he was waiting at a red traffic signal.  The 24-year-old alleged drunk driver was placed under arrest and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (second or subsequent offense), reckless driving, tailgating (following too closely), and failure to stop at a red light.

traffic ticketAuthorities have said the accident occurred around 1 p.m. as the officer was stopped at a red light at the intersection on Route 18 in the East Bridgewater area.  As the officer was waiting for the red light to change, the defendant allegedly crashed his 2013 Volkswagen Golf into the rear of the officers fully marked police SUV. According to a recent news article from the Miami Herald, a United States Marine Corps (USMC) veteran spoke to the families of the three victims he admitted to killing in a drunk driving accident.  Prosecutors have said the accident occurred early on a Sunday morning just before the sun had come up.  There had been a minor traffic accident when some students at the local high school had collided with a car being driven by a 68-year-old woman.

prisonAnother man was driving with his eight-year-old son, and, when he saw the accident, he pulled over to see if he could offer any help.  At this point, defendant came driving down the road at speeds greater than 70-miles-per-hour and crashed into all three vehicles.  Three victims died in this horrific accident. For more than a decade, there has been a major heroin epidemic in Boston and across Massachusetts. This has not only been a major problem for society in general, but it I also a major problem in terms of drugged driving and drugged driving accidents. In addition to heroin, there has also been a major increase in drugged driving accidents involving prescription narcotics ranging from methadone to fentanyl.   It’s a common misconception that a prescription for one of these powerful drugs is a license to freely use them before driving.

drugs-defect-pills-300x226This is of course not true.  Alcohol is the perfect analogy.  Alcohol is legal for anyone 21 or older to consume, but everyone knows it is illegal to drink and drive.  They may still do so, but they can’t claim they were unaware of it being illegal. Continue reading

There have been some questions raised following the Minnesota Vikings very different reactions to two recent drunk driving arrests involving members of the team and their staff.  One of the incidents involved the arrest of a third-year player on the practice squad (Isame Faciane) and the other involved the arrest of the team’s valued defensive coordinator, George Edwards.

football-1199159Edwards was arrested and charged with three criminal offenses related to his alleged drunk driving incident. One of those charges was fourth-degree DWI, which is a more serious drunk driving offense in that jurisdiction.  He agreed to plead guilty to careless driving and was given an entirely probationary sentence for one year and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.  He was also ordered to attend drug and alcohol education programs and go to a victim impact panel meeting.

Meanwhile, Faciane was fired for his offense.

With drunk driving and drunk driving accidents being such an epidemic in the United States and the rest of the world, scientists and law enforcement agencies are constantly looking for new ways and technology to help curb this epidemic.  While breath-testing equipment has come a long way, it is still mainly used to convict people for drunk driving after the arrest or accident and is not a preventative measure.

phoneThere are vehicle breath ignition interlock devices that will not allow a car to start without the driver blowing a clean sample, but there are various ways to defeat this technology.  We have even seen cases where repeat drunk drivers with ignition interlock devices will have their child illegally sit in the front seat, so he or she can blow into the device instead of the driver.
