Insurance companies, as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are constantly doing studies and looking at the rates of serious and fatal traffic accidents across the country.  They are doing this for different reasons, as the insurance companies want to save money by not having to pay out claims, and NHTSA presumably wants to save lives, but the results are generally the same, and they are not always promising.

file3421302577091According to a recent news feature from the Boston Globe, there has been a huge increase in the year over year numbers of highway fatalities in the nation, as compared to last year.  In fact, this increase accounts for the single largest increase from one year to the next since the late 1960s, and this is causing some serious alarm, and there is good reason for this. Jarred Drake Bell, former child actor, is best known for his long-standing role on Nickelodeon’s “Drake and Josh” as the brother of the character played by Josh Peck. In addition to this memorable role, he also gained notoriety for playing the junior-high-school aged version of John Cusack’s character in “High Fidelity.”

prison-1431136-mAccording to a recent news feature from the Santa Monica Observer, the 30-year-old actor has just pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges in California and was sentenced to four days in county jail followed by four years of what is known as summary probation.  He was taken into custody from court directly to serve his four days.  However, it is unlikely that he would actually serve the entire four days due to jail overcrowding issues across the county and the way in which jail time is calculated.  As long as you serve any part of day, it generally counts as a day, even if that means you are being released at dawn on your last day. While jogging may be good exercise, it can also be quite dangerous along busy roads, particularly given the presence of drunk drivers.  For this reason, joggers should exercise as much caution as possible and always wear proper reflective clothing.  However, despite the need to take these precautions, there is no valid excuse for when a drunk driver negligently hits a pedestrian or jogger. Unfortunately, it continues to happen far too often.

one-car-key-1149771-mAccording to a recent news feature from ABC 5 Boston, witnesses to an alleged drunk driving accident involving a jogger decided to chase after the suspect when the suspect fled the scene. This accident occurred in Attleboro, Massachusetts at around five in the afternoon.  The jogger was in his 50’s, and authorities have said that his injuries were very serious in nature and appeared to be life threatening, though his exact condition is unknown as of this time. Unfortunately, many drunk driving accidents in Boston also involve a hit-and-run driver.  The reason for this is because some of these drunk drivers realize they will likely be arrested for drunk driving in addition to other charges related to the accident.  They either are not really thinking at all, or are thinking that even if they get caught later, the police will not be able to prove the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

According to a recent news feature from CBS Local Boston, a woman has just been arrested after she allegedly crashed into a Massachusetts State Police Cruiser in Boston, injuring a trooper.  Authorities say the alleged drunk driving crash occurred in on Route 93 in Boston near the Mass Ave exit around 1:30 a.m.  The alleged drunk driver was in a 2010 Chevy Malibu.

traffic ticketA spokesperson for the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) say the Chevy Malibu was being driven by a 21-year-old woman who was operating her motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Specifically, the allegations are that she rear-ended the trooper’s cruiser with enough force to cause an injury. Continue reading

In a rather bizarre incident reported by KATU 2 News, a police officer alleged to have been responsible for a drunk driving crash in a city-owned vehicle. He reportedly struck up a conversation with arresting officers about fast food and whether a certain restaurant was “cop friendly.”

chicken-sandwiche-1-1563678Authorities have said the police officer, a 17-year veteran on the force, was working for the department’s gang unit and was off-duty, but “on call” while driving the unmarked police car owned by the city at the time of the alleged drunk driving crash.   The crash occurred just before two in the afternoon. There is no doubt that state legislators and organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are trying to make it tougher for those who decide to drink to the point of intoxication and then get behind the wheel of a car.  The state senate has recently passed a bill that will require more people convicted of operating a motor vehicle under the influence (OUI) of intoxicating liquor or drunk to get a vehicle alcohol ignition interlock on their cars.  This is a breath testing machine in which the driver must blow a clean sample before his or her car will start.

According to a recent news feature from the Boston Globe, a Boston University student has just been arraigned in criminal court following an alleged fatal drunk driving car accident.  Prosecutors have charged the 19-year-old defendant with motor vehicle homicide by driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs, operating under the influence (OUI) of intoxicating liquor and other related charges.

highway9Authorities have said that defendant was operating his vehicle when the car drove off the road and crashed into a group of trees. The 18-year-old passenger was killed as result of the fatal drunk driving car accident, according to law enforcement officers. Continue reading

The Massachusetts State Senate passed new legislation earlier this summer that will require alcohol ignition interlock devices in many operating under the influence (OUI) of alcohol or drugs cases.  An alcohol vehicle breath ignition interlock is a device that is installed on a car and will not let the driver start the vehicle until he or she blows into a sample tube and the car determines the driver is not under the influence of alcohol.

one-car-key-1149771-mWhile this is big step forward, the technology still has a long way to go.  Originally, drunk drivers would get someone who was sober to blow in the tube, and they would drive away.  This was known as a “blow and go” and would work until the car was turned off.  To combat this, the newer devices require a new sample to be given at random times throughout the drive when the car is not in motion. According to a recent news article from Fox 25 News Boston, a woman was recently arrested for drunk driving with not pants.  Authorities have said they noticed a car was driving in an erratic manner and initiated a traffic stop.

driving9The first thing the officer noticed was the woman was allegedly not wearing any pants or underwear.  This was all captured on the cruiser’s dash cam, which was operating at the time of her arrest.  After she noticed she was not wearing any pants, she asked her if she had been drinking any alcoholic beverages that night.  Her alleged response was that she had been drinking too much, and she should take her to jail already.  He asked her to put her pants back on, which she happened to have with her in the car.
