Massachusetts Traffic Safety: Keeping Drivers Sober through Football Season

(BEING EDITED)

Officials with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have teamed up with the National Football League (NFL) for the fourth year in a row to help to promote safe and sober driver throughout the professional football season. The message here is to make sure that everyone’s got a designated, sober driver.

Officials with MADD will be joining in on some of the NFL games this year and talking with fans about their designated driver. They’ll be providing useful information for everyone as well as roaming the parking lots to help to promote.

Our Boston drunk driving car accident lawyers understand that we’ve got some hardcore New England Patriots in the area, and we also understand we’ve got some serious drinkers here, too. We’re not telling you not to drink, we’re just asking that you don’t get behind the wheel after doing so. Through the four-year partnership between officials with MADD and with the NFL, they have been able to raise their participation for non-drinking designated drivers by about 30 percent each and every year.

“We have made progress but have more work to do to ensure that everyone associated with the NFL makes safe, responsible decisions with alcohol and never gets behind the wheel when they shouldn’t,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

And this doesn’t only target the people who attend the football games. We’re even talking about the ones who throw their own football celebrations. We’re asking party hosts to help the cause, too.

Whether planning a small private gathering or a large charity event, party hosts are responsible for making sure the event is not only fun, but safe.

What every party host needs to know:

-Don’t rely on coffee to sober up your guests. Only time can make someone sober. – See more at: http://www.madd.org/drunk-driving/safe-party/#sthash.6NvBY9E5.dpuf
-Remember that beer and wine are just as intoxicating as hard liquor.

-Never rely on someone’s physical appearance to judge their level of intoxication. If they’ve been drinking, they better not be driving.

-Always have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages available at the party.

-Discuss designated drivers as everyone gets to the party.

-Make sure that you have phone number of taxi companies available for those who need it.

-Consider using a non-carbonated base, such as fruit juice, if you plan to serve an alcoholic punch, so that alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream at a slower rate.

-Serve plenty of food to help offset the effects of alcohol. Salty snacks can make people feel thirsty, so set a pitcher of water on the table as well.

-Stop serving alcohol two hours before the party is over, but continue serving non-alcoholic drinks and food. For most people, this two-hour wait will not be enough time to clear all the alcohol from their bodies. Therefore, be sure to find safe rides home via taxis or designated drivers.

-Collect guests’ keys upon arrival, and make sure they are sober before their keys are returned.

-Do not pressure guests to drink or rush to refill their glasses when empty. And, never serve guests who are visibly intoxicated.
