Brother of DUI Victim Takes Stand with MADD

Every night in every bar or club in America, there is a good chance there is a person who has had too much to drink and is planning to get behind the wheel of a vehicle where they will be driving under the influence of alcohol.  While many people make this choice time and time again without giving much thought to the consequences, for those who suffer the consequences, they are often lifelong or even deadly.

beerAccording to a recent news article from ABC, the brother of drunk driving crash victim is speaking out with the help of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to do whatever he can to stop people from drunk driving. This young advocate chose to speak out about one month after his brother was killed in a fatal drunk driving accident.

In the fatal accident that took his brother’s life, his brother and another occupant of the car were both killed when the car lost control, swerved off the road, and hit a tree.  The brother was understandably devastated by the fatal drunk driving accident and wants to speak out now, since we are in the midst of high school graduations, prom season, and about to start summer break for many students. This is one of the most dangerous times of the year in terms of teen drunk driving accidents, and he wants to make sure that other families do not have to suffer the type of loss his family did.

Additionally, while many drunk driving accidents will result in one or more deaths, many accidents will result in the victims surviving but suffering severe and permanent disability.  There are many people in wheelchairs across the country who were paralyzed in drunk driving accidents.

While everyone uses the term accident, the term crash is actually more appropriate, since, as our Boston drunk driving accident lawyers have seen in virtually every case, these so-called accidents all could have been avoided had the driver exercised better judgment and not gotten behind the wheel after having too much to drink.  When someone gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle after drinking to the point of intoxication, they are engaging in negligent, and sometimes reckless, conduct.  Reckless and negligent conduct is avoidable, and that is why these incidents are best described as drunk driving crashes.

After losing his brother, there are certain things he wants potential drunk drivers to know, and much of his message is targeted at high school students.  He wants them to know they are not invincible.  While this may seem like common sense, many teens and young adults have never experienced the type of tragedy or loss that allows them to have a firm understanding of their own mortality and how fragile life is.  It is for this reason that we often see teens engage in activities that are much more dangerous than anything they would ever do when they are older and have more life experience.

He wants them to know that consequences of drunk driving are real, and the hurt is often unbearable.
